6 children, adult, injured in highway crash
MANCHESTER, Tenn. (AP) - Authorities say six children were injured in a crash on Interstate 24 in Coffee County.
According to media reports, the crash occurred around 5 p.m. on Saturday between Manchester and Monteagle.
A preliminary investigation by the Tennessee Highway Patrol says a sport utility vehicle was traveling east along I-24 when it blew a tire and crashed.
The vehicle was occupied by an adult driver and the six children, who were members of a Nashville dance team.
Officials say the driver and about three of the children were flown to local hospitals. Their names and conditions have not been released.
The other children apparently only suffered minor injuries.
Man threatens to blow up airport runway
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Authorities say a Davidson County man has been arrested for threatening to blow up a runway at the Nashville International Airport.
Zachary L. Smith, 25, was charged with filing a false report and tampering with evidence.
According to an affidavit, Smith called 911 Saturday morning and made the threat, which prompted airport security to conduct a widespread search for suspicious objects or activity.
Investigators traced and recovered Smith's phone at his home in Antioch, a community in southeastern Davidson County.
Smith denied making any phone threats, but investigators recovered deleted 911 calls from his phone. Authorities say he also made multiple calls to the Russian Embassy in Washington, D.C.
Smith was being held Sunday in the Davidson County Jail on $35,000 bond. Jail records did not list an attorney for Smith.
After 56 years, preacher gives up ministry
MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - When St. James CME Church in Collierville decided to replace the carpet in the foyer and hallway with tile, the church's minister was there on his hands and knees gluing and grouting the 12-inch pieces.
Now at 78, Rev. Louis T. Purham is retiring from the ministry after 56 years. He was to preach his last sermon on Sunday.
Officially, Purham retired at the annual Christian Methodist Episcopal conference in July 2010.
But at that conference, the bishop asked him to immediately to take over at St. James, which was struggling to stay afloat as its supply - or transitional - pastor. Before his assignment as supply pastor, Purham had been the Collierville church's elder for a number of years.
Purham took his first pastoral job in 1958.
Tennessee jail using art to assist inmates
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (AP) - Inmates at the Hamilton County Jail in Chattanooga have 90 minutes each Friday night to escape - in a figurative sense.
The jail, through a nonprofit organization, offers the inmates a nine-week course in art called Mark Making that instructors describe as rewarding for them and emotionally beneficial for the inmates.
The course is voluntary but one of the more popular extracurricular offerings at the jail.
The inmates come from across the jail's spectrum - wearing orange jumpsuits for general population or red to signify high-risk offender status. All remain shackled around their ankles and have the same jail-issued orange sandals on their feet during the class.
Inmate Christopher Wehunt told the Chattanooga Times Free Press described the art class calming in an otherwise violent place.
Titans hope having more winners helps turnaround
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Finding his locker parked in the middle of the defensive backs left linebacker Wesley Woodyard feeling nervous as he joined the Titans.
A defensive captain in Denver, Woodyard wasn't quite sure what to think.
Turns out the Titans knew exactly what they were doing with the locker assignment.
Woodyard says it's all cool now because he sits next to safeties and defensive backs - the very players he has to communicate with calling schemes.
Tennessee hasn't reached the postseason since 2008, and turning around a franchise mired in mediocrity needs talent and winning experience. The Titans added some winners a year ago in safety Bernard Pollard and tight end Delanie Walker with right tackle Michael Oher and linebackers Woodyard and Shaun Phillips this offseason along with new coach Ken Whisenhunt.
