CINCINNATI (AP) - Skip Schumaker drove in a pair of runs and the Cincinnati Reds withstood Jorge Soler's first-at-bat homer and an RBI single for a 7-5 victory over the Chicago Cubs on Wednesday night. Soler, a 22-year-old prospect from Cuba, got a nine-year, $30 million deal from the Cubs. He was called up on Wednesday, started in right field and batted fifth.

CINCINNATI (AP) - There's no incentive for the Colts and the Bengals to play their starters much in the final preseason game. They've done so well that both teams are feeling good about the regular season. The Colts and the Bengals will be looking mostly at competition for backup spots Thursday night at Paul Brown Stadium.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) - The series that decides which 20 horses qualify to run in the Kentucky Derby is adding a new qualifier. Churchill Downs announced Wednesday that the $500,000 Los Alamitos Futurity to be run on Dec. 20 will award qualifying points.
