NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Local organization Cool People Care started selling "We are Nashville" t-shirts the Thursday following the May flood and planned to sell around 1,000 over the coming months.
Instead, they sold 1,000 that day and thousands more over the next few days, making the company over $100,000, all of which they donated to the Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee.
T-shirts are still being sold on the company's Web site, as are limited edition posters that will go on sale for the holidays.
The company, however, is so much more than "We are Nashville" gear, according to its co-founder, Sam Davidson.
He told News 2, "We connect people who want to make a difference with opportunities to do that."
CoolPeopleCare.com gives readers information about volunteer opportunities, community events and merchandise that supports charitable causes.
Today, four years after its launch, Cool People Care reaches 10,000 people a day.
"We want to be the one-stop shop. People can come to our site to find the things they need to make an impact," continued Davidson, who is putting his words of wisdom in print, writing the book, "50 Things Your Life Doesn't Need."
He said, "The idea behind it is that we all have a lot of distractions in our life that I think prohibit us from finding what it is we care about, what it is we are passionate about."
In the book, Davidson proposes getting rid of things like "empty" suitcases.
"You can take some of those and take them and pack them and travel and you may find when you go to a country you've never been to," he said. "You'll discover something about yourself."
The book also asks tough questions like "What is it that you go out of your way to set the record straight on?" or "What is it that's worth debating a friend over?"
Davidson told News 2 finding those answers will help you find your passion and change your life.
50 Things Your Life Doesn't Need goes on sale next month at local retailers.
Cool People Care is also opening a store in east Nashville's Riverside Village during the holiday season to sell the limited edition posters.
