Associated Press - July 28, 2010 5:05 PM ET

NEWPORT, Tenn. (AP) - A pilot and onlookers escaped injury when a helicopter's rotors separated and destroyed the cockpit and parts of the tail rotor struck a nearby hotel in Newport.

Newport Police Chief Maurice Shults told The Newport Plain Talk that no one was injured in the accident Wednesday morning.

The pilot, identified as 22-year-old Taylor Robertson of Hattiesburg, Miss., told police that he had not yet lifted off when the helicopter began to fly apart. Shults said the pilot suffered only scratches and abrasions.

Carter Dittrich, a witness, said the top and tail rotors hit each other and pieces went flying everywhere. Pieces were found more than 100 feet away.
