Rescued animals up for adoption at shelter

Posted:

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Several animals rescued from a cruelty case earlier this month are now up for adoption at the Metro Animal Care and Control facility.

"They were surrendered by the person who was arrested on the cruelty case so that allowed us to move forward with trying to get these on permanent home situations," Metro Animal Services Director Judy Ladebauche explained Wednesday.

There are 15 dogs up for adoption in addition to eight horses, a goat and a donkey.

Animal control officer Billy Biggs said the dogs are still receiving medication but should be available for adoption in the coming days.

"Some of them had severe scabies.  They are responding well to treatment.  We are just hoping they all get a second chance and go to a forever home directly from here," he said.

One of the dogs, named Chocolate, had been stolen and will soon be reunited with his owners.

"The owners came in and said their dog had been stolen," Biggs said.  "The dog went crazy we he saw them."

In addition to the dogs seized from the Antioch home, there are several others up for adoption at the shelter.

The dog adoption fee at the Metro Animal Care and Control facility is $90, which includes the animal's first shots, de-worming, heartworm, spay/neuter and rabies vaccination.

Adoption hours are from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday.  The center is located at 5125 Harding Place.

The owner of the Antioch home where the animals were found, 37-year-old Dorothy Kifer, is charged with 26 counts of animal cruelty.

She also faces child neglect charges after her four children were found malnourished and covered in filth.

The children are now in the custody of the Tennessee Department of Children's Services.
