MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - The Commercial Appeal newspaper reports goverment records show a nighclub that employed a security guard charged with fatally shooting a man in the parking lot has no liquor, beer or business licenses.
Jeff Jacobs, who manages the business tax division of the Shelby County Clerk's office said the VIP Club doesn't have required business or beer permits. He said if a club operates without them, it's operating illegally.
The newspaper reported the state Alcoholic Beverage Commission has no license on file for the club.
Shelby County deputies were called to the building early Saturday after a fight broke out in the parking lot and shots were fired. They found 30-year-old Douglas Smith of Bartlett dead inside a car about a quarter-mile away.
The department filed a second-degree murder charge against security guard Justin Smith, who is unrelated to the victim.
