NASHVILLE, Tenn. – It was four years ago Nashville mom and former auto parts saleswoman Juanita Lane opened Dulce Desserts in Edgehill Village.
Specializing in wedding and specialty cakes, pies and cupcakes, Lane said she has found life as an entrepreneur both challenging and rewarding.
"I didn't have a plan. I just came to a point where it was the time to do something different," she told News 2. "I was almost 40 and I found out that I had an artistic talent I did not know I had. I knew I could make the inside [of cakes] delicious but I had no idea about doing the beautiful."
Dulce Desserts employs two full-time employees and two part-time workers and Lane says they've stayed busy despite the down economy.
"When the stock market tanked, our phones did not ring for two days and it was scary," she recalled. "We just continued business as usual because if people are sad, they might not buy a five-layer giant wedding cake but they may need a couple of cookies."
Southern Living featured Dulce Desserts in its November issue, which Lane says is one of the most read issues of the year.
"I went from bring in corporate America and a single mom to being in Southern Living in five years in a totally different field," she said.
Dulce Desserts is located at 1207 Villa Place. Visit DulceDesserts.com for more information.
