Suspect sought after dragging Metro officer 35 yards

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The search continues for the man accused of dragging a Metro police officer as he attempted to evade arrest late Wednesday night.

According to Metro police, Officer Carlos Anderson and his officer in training, Officer Robert Shelton, pulled over a pickup truck for non-working tail lights at about 10:30 p.m. on Arrington Street at Meridian Street in east Nashville.

As the officers approached the vehicle on foot, the driver, 43-year-old Jeffrey Story, exited the pickup truck.

The officers verbally directed him back into the truck and turned off his truck.

After learning Story had outstanding warrants for domestic assault, theft and failure to appear on a suspended license, the officer asked him to step out of the truck but he refused.

Police said Anderson reached into the truck to try and pull Story out but before he could do so, Story took off with the officer hanging out the door.

"As it is with police work sometimes, people don't want to go to jail and we were gonna have to make him,” Capt. Harmon Hunsicker told News 2.  "So, as Officer Anderson was trying to extract him from the vehicle pulling, he reached up, started the vehicle, dropped it in drive and when he took off, Officer Anderson was pinned in the vehicle."

Anderson was dragged about 35 yards before Story swerved the car, knocking Anderson off.

The nine-year police department veteran was transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center where he was treated for bruises and abrasions.

He has since been released.

Police said Shelton, the officer in training, did exactly what he should have.

"Officer Anderson indicated that when the incident did occur, his officer in training, Officer Shelton, was nearby doing just what he was supposed to be doing and as he was trained," Capt. Hunsicker said.  "He said when the incident went down, Officer Shelton put out pertinent info about the suspect vehicle which was a silver pickup truck, older model Chevy, and that he rendered first aid to Anderson until medical personnel got there."

Police said Story ditched his pickup truck a short time after the incident and stole his ex-girlfriend's car.

Police are searching for that car, a blue 2001 Ford Mustang with Tennessee tag 691WYP.

A warrant charging Story with attempted criminal homicide has been issued.

Anyone with information is urged to call Crime Stoppers at 74-CRIME.
