FAIRVIEW, Tenn. – Two students in Fairview are accused of trying to buy and sell marijuana on school grounds.
According to investigators with the Williamson County Sheriff's Department, on November 4, a student brought a small amount of marijuana to Fairview Middle School to allegedly sell it to another student.
Parents say the students were only in sixth grade.
Brandy Spann's son attends Fairview Middle School. She told News 2 she was surprised to learn of the incident and to learn how young the students are who were allegedly involved.
"Sixth grade is only 10 or 11 [years old] so yes, that's really young," she continued.
Investigators say the two students are being disciplined but would not comment further.
According to parents, instead of being sent to an alternative learning center, the students were sent to Westwood Elementary School.
After several parents contacted News 2 to express their concern, News 2 called the school district.
School officials declined to comment, saying they do not comment on student discipline issues.
They did, however say generally, when a student younger than seventh grade gets in trouble they are sent to another school that has an empty classroom available rather than an alternative learning center.
School officials said the students have different start and finish times, they don't see other children and they only interact with teachers.
Jared Eardley said while he’s heard other parents concerns, he’s not worried.
"I'm not really that worried, honestly," he told News 2. "I think the school can handle those things well. I don't think they're involved with other children as much, so I think the situation is okay."
Spann said the incident gives her yet another reason to talk to her son about drugs.
"What it looks like, where it comes from and who to tell if he sees anyone with it," she said.
Investigators said the students are facing simple possession charges.
