Principal resigns following arrest on harassment charges

Posted:

PORTLAND, Tenn. - A middle school principal in Portland, Sumner County has resigned after his arrest earlier this month.

Jim Butler, the former principal at Portland East Middle School, is accused of harassing a Sumner County teacher who previously worked for him.

Investigators with the Gallatin Police Department said the harassment began after a relationship between the two ended.

The police report claims Butler called the victim and sent her unwanted text messages and emails.

Butler was arrested October 15 and charged with harassment.

He worked in the Sumner County school system for 37 years, previously teaching at Portland High School, Rucker Stewart Middle School and Clyde Riggs Elementary School.

Butler is scheduled to appear in a Sumner County courtroom later this month.

Harassment is a misdemeanor.  A conviction carries a possible sentence of 11 months and 29 days or a fine of up to $2,500.
