NASHVILLE, Tenn. - An accident involving a tractor trailer on Interstate 40 at White Bridge Road slowed traffic west of Nashville for most of the day Tuesday.
The accident occurred shortly after 9 a.m. in the eastbound lanes, just before the White Bridge Road overpass.
Metro police are investigating and said it appears the driver, 42-year-old James Fincher of Petersburg, Michigan, suffered some kind of medical condition.
They said his 2000 Peterbilt truck veered off the interstate and hit a concrete barrier.
He was transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center where he was later pronounced dead.
Police said Fincher was the only person in the truck and he was not wearing a seatbelt.
Authorities said there was no evidence of alcohol involvement or excessive speed.
The trailer of the truck was carrying steel beams, some of which spilled onto the roadway.
Some of the truck's fuel also spilled and had to be cleaned up.
The area where the accident occurred is under construction, part of an ongoing improvement project.
Witnesses said if the truck hadn't hit a retaining wall, it would have plowed into the active construction zone.
