Suspect in chase to be jailed upon hospital release

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Police in Nashville have issued arrest warrants charging 21-year-old Joshua Bryan Kellow with aggravated assault and evading arrest in connection to Tuesday morning's pursuit in which officers were forced to fire shots at Kellow after he allegedly tried to run over a sergeant with the Berry Hill Police Department.

Metro police officers first spotted Kellow fleeing the scene of an accident at Intestate 24 and Briley Parkway and began pursuing him on Thompson Lane after he traveled the wrong way on the I-24 entrance ramp.

Excessive speeds forced Metro police to back off as Kellow traveled onto I-440 and then onto I-24.

He exited at Briley Parkway, near the initial hit and run scene, where Berry Hill Police Sgt. David Gross and Corporal David Hazlett, in separate marked cars, spotted him and gave chase.

The officers pursued Kellow onto Craighead Street where he crashed into a guardrail a short time later.

As the officers got out of their cars, Kellow put the car in reverse, backed up and then drove towards one of the officers positioned near the guardrail.

Metro police Cmdr. Mike Alexander said the suspect's actions prompted the officers to fire shots.

"It's our preliminary understanding that the officers were placed in fear of their lives for being struck by a vehicle that was actively coming in their direction," Alexander said.

Kellow was not hit by the gunfire and fled the scene.  He wound up flipping his vehicle on Nolensville Pike at 2nd Avenue South a short distance away.

Medics took Kellow to Vanderbilt University Medical Center with minor injuries.

Metro police said he will be booked upon release from the hospital.

Kellow has been charged with 29 offenses as an adult between January 2006 and June 6 of this year

He has convictions for domestic assault, harassment, criminal impersonation, forgery and theft.
